If you've spent an evening reading studio websites in Dubai, you've probably noticed: they all sound the same. Same words — creative, professional, world-class. Different prices, different group sizes, very different quality. This is the short version of what's actually worth knowing before you take your daughter to a trial class.
The 5 types of dance she could start with
Almost every studio in Dubai falls into one of five buckets. They look identical on a website. They're not the same thing.
- Classical ballet. Slowest visible progress in the first months, biggest payoff later. Builds posture (the kind you notice when she sits at the table six months in), focus, and the ability to follow a complex sequence. Right starting age: 3.
- Rhythmic / aesthetic gymnastics. Flexibility, coordination, work with ball, ribbon and rope. Pairs naturally with ballet — many girls do both. Right starting age: 4.
- Contemporary / jazz. Expression and musicality. Works best on a body that's already learned posture, so good teachers ask for 1–2 years of ballet first. Right starting age: 7.
- Hip-hop / street. High energy, group performance, big confidence boost on stage. Very different muscle profile from ballet — they don't really compete. Right starting age: 6.
- Kids dance fitness. Music plus movement, no syllabus, no measurable progress. Fine for energy release; not a foundation. Right starting age: 2.
What to start with, by age
| Age | Best first class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 | Mini ballet (45 min, 1× week) | Builds body awareness, balance, listening, group routines |
| 5–6 | Classical ballet (60 min, 1–2× week) | First real technique — barre work, basic positions |
| 7–8 | Classical ballet (60 min, 2× week) | Foundation that transfers to any other style afterwards |
| 9–12 | Classical ballet + 2nd discipline | She can now handle ballet plus gymnastics, jazz, or contemporary |
What the first class will actually feel like
If you've never sat through a kids' ballet class, here's what to expect — both for her and for you.
- The first 5 minutes are the hardest for her. She may freeze, she may cry, she may stick to you. All three are completely normal. A good teacher knows how to peel her in gently. Don't apologise — just let it happen.
- You can sit and watch. Reputable Dubai studios let parents stay in the room (or behind glass) for the first class. If a studio asks you to leave, that's a flag worth a follow-up question.
- Bring almost nothing. Hair tied back, leggings or shorts, socks. For a trial you don't need leotards or ballet shoes — they'll tell you what to buy if she stays.
- By the end she'll either lean toward the teacher or lean toward you. That's your answer. A 4-year-old doesn't lie about whether she liked something — watch the last 5 minutes more than the first 5.
5 things that tell you if it's the right studio
Five things to check. Three of them you can ask on the phone before you even visit.
- Group size. Right answer for under-8s: 6–12 girls. Over 14 means the teacher can't correct individual posture — which is the whole point of starting young.
- The method. A real answer names a system: RAD, Vaganova, Cecchetti, Russian Method, ISTD. «We teach dance» or «our own curriculum» isn't an answer.
- KHDA approval. KHDA is Dubai's education regulator. If a studio shrugs at the question, they're operating outside the basic standards on teacher qualifications and child safety.
- An annual stage performance. Look for a venue, a month, photos from last year. A studio without a real recital has no finish line for the school year — and recitals are where girls actually fall in love with ballet.
- Are you allowed to watch the trial? A confident studio says yes. If not, that tells you something about the rest of the year too.
How much it costs in Dubai
Ballet and dance prices in Dubai are more consistent than studio websites make them look. As of 2026:
- Budget studios (basic group classes, large groups, no recital) — 500–600 AED/month.
- Standard ballet, gymnastics or kids dance — 2 classes a week at most reputable Dubai schools — 800–1 200 AED/month. This is the band you'll see almost everywhere serious.
- Annual costuming, recital fee, uniform — usually 800–2 000 AED extra per year.
Plan for around 10 000–15 000 AED per year all-in at a reputable school with two classes a week. Most studios offer a discount for term or annual payment.
Where Prima fits in
A short, honest note on where we are in this picture.
Prima Ballet Dubai teaches classical ballet and aesthetic gymnastics for girls 3–12 only. Authentic Russian Method, taught in a warm, friendly way (not the stereotype-strict Soviet style). Small groups, up to 12 girls. KHDA approved. Annual end-of-year stage performance for every student. Two studios:
- Creek Harbour — Creek Gate 2. Closest if you live in Creek Harbour, Festival City, Al Jaddaf, Nad al Sheba.
- Silicon Oasis — inside Fitness First. Closest if you live in Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Mirdif, Nad Al Sheba.
A trial is 45 minutes, free, no upfront commitment. You stay in the room. If she likes it, we tell you the price. If not, we wave you off.
